My opinion on Yamaha NS10m monitors
I always closely monitor internet forums because everybody has different preferences in relation to sound work. I used to like reading expert and amateur opinions about monitor speakers they like to work on and what’s important, which ones give the most „true” sound.
It’s important to create the most exact and true sound rather than the most beautiful one when working on sounds. It was always a problem for me, because I was working on beautiful sounding Yamaha MS5a speaker monitors, which always delighted me with their sound. But was the sound I was working on really good? And did my productions gained by that? No…
Finding the right tone
There has been always a lot of talk on the internet about Yamaha NS10a – passive monitors which are still (in my onion) ones of the best world’s quality. You will find them in recording studios of the best music producers. I decided to get them myself and I also bought good amplifier, rare classic – Adcom GFA 535.
The first time I listened to music on those monitors, I thought they sounded very dark, with too much middle bandwidth and little commercials recordings. As it turned out it was their biggest advantage. You can tell which recordings sound good on these speakers. When listening recordings of Jean Michel Jarre, Michael Jackson or Quincy Jones, the music did lose any quality and still sounded very good. When I tried listening to earlier productions though, o dear, nothing sounded well. It turned out there was much I didn’t know.
There is a simple conclusion to this: it’s possible to play music, so it sounds good on Yamaha NS10m studio speakers. I learnt that Yamaha speakers are very demanding and do not tolerate any lack of sound correction or changes in dynamics and proportions of sound. Setting the right proportions of the instruments are also a good side of Yamaha. It’s relatively essay to transfer around the audio sounds. Setting the right correction of sound and proportion is their strong side, as long as the recording has been thoroughly listed to (experience) and that one has the knowledge how to do it. We all know that there is more to it than just professional equipment. It’s worth working hard on these monitors, as you get a really good sound in return, which we all work to achieve. These monitors don’t know any compromises. If something sounds good on them it means that someone who did the recording knew what he was doing.
